Abstract/Contents: | A study was initiated in 1979 on Eremochloa ophiuroides to determine overall turfgrass quality, shoot density, ability to grow in alkaline conditions, and resistance to Rhizoctonia solani (brown patch). The cultivars Common, Oklawn, and Tennessee Hardy were used. The turf received 1 lb. of actual nitrogen per m², and was mowed twice weekly at 1.5 inches with clippings removed. Results in 1983 showed that there were no significant differences in turfgrass quality ratings among the cultivars. Tennessee Hardy displayed greater shoot density than either Common or Oklawn. Although centipedegrass usually grows best on acidic soils, the results to date show that it is able to grow in alkaline conditions with a pH as high as 8.4. Tennessee Hardy and Common were very susceptible to Rhizoctonia solani while Oklawn showed good resistance to this disease. This study is in its fourth year. A minimum of six years is required to obtain reliable field evaluations. No final conclusions can be made on the cultivars until completion. |
