Abstract/Contents: | "The Dow Chemical Company has applied for registration of a new herbicide product to be used for weed control along highway and other rights-of-ways. This product will be marketed as TRANSLINE Herbicide and should be available by late spring of 1989.This herbicide formulation contains 0.38 lb clopyralid and 2.0 lb 2,4-D per gallon. Application will be labeled at rates of 2.5 to 10 pints per acre (0.12 to 0.5 lbs/acre clopyralid and 0.6 to 2.5 lbs/acre 2,4-D). This product may be applied as a broadcast foliar treatment in 10 or more gallons/acre of total spray solution. Higher volumes should be used on difficult to control weed species and enough total spray volume should be used to provide thorough and uniform foliar coverage. Spot treatments using the herbicide can be made using 4 to 8 pints of herbicide in 50 gallons of total spray solution. Again, weed foliage should be sprayed uniformly. Whenever broadcast or spot treatments are applied, no more than 10 pints of formulated herbicide can be applied per acre per year. Over 90% species of weeds are susceptable to clopyralid. Important to roadside vegetation control are such species as thistles, knapweeds, kudzu, curly dock, and wild carrot. Efficacy trials have shown percent control of these and other plants to be 80 to 100% when clopyralid is applied at label rates. Clopyralid is particularly effective against plants of the legume and composite families. An even broader spectrum of weeds can be controlled with the combination of clopyralid and 2,4-D. Additional testing has shown the clopyralid and 2,4-D herbicide to pose minimal risk to humans and the environment when used according to the label. The LD50 is >2,500 mg/kg. Half-life in soil is an average of 23 days. In summary, clopyralid and 2,4-D will be the newest product for industrial weed control from The Dow Chemical Company. Highway rights-of-way managers will find this product to be a valuable asset to their roadside maintenance programs." |
