Abstract/Contents:There are several different types of stress that may injure or kill bermudagrass during the winter months, including direct low temperature kill, desiccation, mechanical injury due to traffic on semi-frozen turf, and disease. In response to lower soil temperature, bermudagrass begins the process of preparing itself for winter. Succulent, rapidly growing plant tissue, or bermudagrass that is subjected to waterlogged conditions is hindered in this hardening process. Sound management practices prior, during, and following a hard winter can make the difference in bermudagrass surviving the winter.
