Abstract/Contents: | "Silica sand based root zones are routinely used for sport turf construction because they resist compaction and provide enough air for root growth. However, sands have low retention capacity for water and nutrients. A number of amendment materials can be used for root zone improvement and to address problems with insufficient water retention. In the Czech and Slovak Republics, deposits of bentonites and zeolites are available for use as horticultural amendment materials in potting soil. As restrictions on the use of water to irrigate turfgrass become more severe, research into materials that enhance the physical properties of silica sand and provide good physical properties for root growth is desirable. Use of some traditional materials such as sphagnum peat has some environmental concerns and can cause instability in the root zone. Use of inorganic amendments such as hydro absorbent polymers can be an alternative. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of selected amendment materials on turfgrass growth in pots and to assess the physical characteristics of the root zones." |
