Abstract/Contents: | "Healthy grass growth is essential for the safe and reliable performance of any cricket pitch. The root system helps bind the soil surface, reducing crack formation and improving playing consistency. However, the compacted clay soil of a cricket pitch tends to have poor performing, shallow root systems due to various factors including mechanical impedance to root penetration, unfavourable gaseous concentrations in the soil atmosphere and soil water, and impeded movement of water into the soil (Waddington et al., 1965). The turfgrass also performs an important function of soil moisture removal through evapotranspiration, which in turn affects the bulk density and strength (Adams and Gibbs, 1994). Various mechanical methods have been developed to alleviate the negative effects on grass growth attributed to compacted soils. Some maintenance programmes have no aeration at all, with seemingly no harmful effects to pitch performance, whilst others need proper aeration to maintain health and vitality of the grass cover. Therefore, an experiment was designed to determine the effect of five different aeration treatments on the properties of clay soil fine turf sports surfaces to understand the underlying principles that govern soil aeration. This paper describes the first data set from that ongoing study." |
