Abstract/Contents:"In order to fully address the socio-ecological drivers of heterogeneous residential landscapes within the urban matrix, a broad literature review was conducted to attain a comprehensive understanding of residential yards. This synthesis highlights the well-studied components from the biological and social science perspectives, as well as identifies gaps in current knowledge. Within the field of ecology, studies of residential yards often focus on species abundance and composition in regard to urban biodiversity. A handful of studies have also begun to classify the soil characteristics and biogeochemical processing occurring in different yard treatments. However, most of these studies compare across yards; little work has been completed to quantify the heterogeneity within a single yard. In the social sciences, several studies classify homeowners' landscaping preferences and perceptions of various landscape types. These preferences are often related to landscaping practices, neighborhood standards, homeowner education, and cost. The integration of the social and ecological sciences at the fine scale of residential landscapes is a relatively unexamined area of study. The results from a preliminary survey of Phoenix area homeowners' preferences and yard management practices will be examined within the context of the current literature. This synthesis of the literature, as well as the survey results, will contribute to an integrated socio-ecological study examining the relationships among the drivers of human behavior, residential landscape management decisions, and the ecological responses"
