Abstract/Contents: | "The 2010 FIFA Football World Cup (FWC) will be hosted for the first time in Africa at ten stadiums (match venues) in South Africa (Fig. 1) during June/July (winter period). The collective seating capacity will be for more than 576 000 spectators during the 64 matches scheduled for the 2010 FWC. Only four of the stadiums are of previous existence. All the stadiums are multipurpose facilities for sport (rugby and football/soccer), e n t e r t a i n m e n t (concerts) and other community uses like political rallies, funerals and church gatherings. Apart from the ten match venues, there are 15 venue specific training sites (pitches where some spectatorship training will take place). Each of the 32 countries taking part will have a base camp with at least Fig. 1 Map of South Africa indicating the location of the ten match venues for the 2010 FWC. one pitch, of similar status to that of the match venues. The match referees will have exclusive use of three privately designated pitches for their preparation. Contingency pitches, for all the match venues, will also be provided so as to replace a complete playing surface if needed. It will be the first FWC with High Definition Television broadcasting testifying the very high expectations regarding quality and appearance of all pitches. It is also the first time that as many as 32 countries will participate in the competition. The hosting of the Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009, proved invaluable in the preparation for 2010 FWC. A number of challenges as discussed below, in the preparation of the pitches to comply with the high standards of FIFA have emerged and will be addressed accordingly." |
