Abstract/Contents: | "Weed control options during turfgrass establishment are limited. There is currently only one herbicide, siduron (N-[2-methylcyclohexyl] N-phenylurea), which is impregnated on fertilizer for use at seeding in turfgrass. Siduron effectively controls grass weeds, but has litte efficiacy on broadleaf weeds. Mesotrione (2-[4-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzoyl]-1, 3-cyclohexanedione) has proven to selectively control a broad spectrum of broadleaf and some grass weeds in cool-season turfgrass, and may also be impregnated on fertilizer. Glasshouse evaluations were conducted at Pullman, WA in the spring (April and May) of 2007 to evaluate turfgrass safey at four rates of mesotrione (161 g ha-1, 282 g ha-1, 343 g ha-1, and 565 g ha-1) applied to 'Treazure' chewings fescue (Festuca rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaudin) and 'Gallery' perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Each rate was applied at four timings (4-week pre-plant, 2-week pre-plant, 1-week pre-plant, and at planting). The soil was a Palouse silt loam (Pachic Ultic Haploxerolls, fine silty, mixed, mesic). No mesotrione rates or application timings were safe to apply when seeding chewings fescue, as there was a reduction in shoot dry weight, unacceptable phytotoxicity, and a reduction in seedling emergence. All mesotrione rates and application timings were safe on perennial ryegrass, as dry weight reductions were minimal, full recovery from initial phytotoxicity occured, and seedling emergence was 95% by the conclusion of the study (35 days after planting). Mesotrione was safe to apply to perennial ryegrass at, or prior to planting but was not considered to be safe on chewings fescue at the rates and timings included in this study." |
