Abstract/Contents: | Presents information on the use of weevils to control puncturevine, identifying the weevil species used as Microlarinus lypriformis and Microlarinus lareyniei. Explains that the former "develops within the stems and in the crown of the puncture-vine [puncturevine]," whereas the latter "feeds within the seeds and hollows them out." Describes varying levels of control effectiveness observed in Hawaii and Arizona during the 1960s. Briefly discusses the potential of cool weather to halt weevil activity, noting that "in Arizona...[this] means that puncture-vines often are able to grow a good crop of healthy seeds in the fall after the weevils stop their activity." Notes that "in the 1964 report from Hawaii, two parasites were found attacking the weevils." Identifies one of these parasites as Neocatolaccus tylodermae, and another as Zatropis perdubius, stating that the parasites "have turned from attacking the weevils that were already here to parasitizing...[the] new weevils." Provides three photographs of puncturevine seeds and stems affected by weevils. |
