Abstract/Contents: | Details the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a federal program designed to retire and replant a projected 40 million acres of excess cropland across the United States during a ten-year period. Provides historical background for the program and outlines CRP progress by four vegetative zones: mid to tall grass prairies, short grass prairies, northern mixed prairies, and intermountain shrub steppes. Reports the native grass supply in replanted zones as well as difficulties faced by the program in terms of seed quality, weed control, and drought stress. Provides a basis for quality evaluation of CRP plantings in retired croplands and concludes that "the grass seed industry has responded relatively well to the Conservation Reserve Program." |
