Abstract/Contents:Presents a report conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service to improve seed production and forage potential in Eastern gamagrass. Provides a brief background of the species and explains that a special collection of Eastern gamagrass was discovered in Manhattan, Kansas. Reports that these unique accessions, with "perfect flowers" in place of male flowers, "will be crossed...in an effort to develop hardy, high volume forage and seed producing lines adapted to the Northeast." Briefly mentions the breeding method to be used, explaining that "[the accessions] will be treated with colchicine to attempt to induce tetraploid lines with seed production potential." Concludes that joint work has been done with Cornell University, emphasizing that "appropriate inter-agency plans need to be formulated to do the best job possible."
