Abstract/Contents: | Briefly reports on breeding programs conducted by Pure-Seed Testing, Inc. in Hubbard, Oregon to improve rust resistance, Helminthosporium leaf spot resistance, red thread resistance, and overall quality and seed yield in Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, "and all of the important fine fescue species." Details the methods used in Kentucky bluegrass breeding, stating that "the major emphasis...is to develop composite varieties consisting of three or more highly apomictic lines that have similar maturities, plant heights, and growth habits with different genetic backgrounds." Reports that "in all of these turfgrass species we are also selecting for better dwarfing tendencies, reduced mature heights, and reduced vertical growth rates. These dwarf plants have been found in all of the above species and have shown better turf quality." |
