Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted by the University of Tennessee to genetically improve grasses using tall fescue replications and orchardgrass genotypes for assessment. Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that "seed was harvested from 60 replications of 8 tall fescue clones...The presence or absence of the fescue endophyte was determined by the ELISA [enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay] technique. Reports that "reciprocal crosses made between orchardgrass genotypes that produce somatic embryos in vitro and those that do not indicated that the embryogenic trait was transmitted through both male and female gametes...[and] it appears that orchardgrass suspension cultures can tolerate concentrations of NaCl [sodium chloride] higher than 200 mM [millimoles]."
