Abstract/Contents: | "Genetic variation for seed dormancy is well known within the species zoysia (Zoysia japonica Steud.). Tissues covering the caryopsis (i.e., glume, lemma and seed-coat) are generally the main factors limiting seed germination. Two main questions arise when studying seed germination, first, do different seed dormancy levels depend on morphology of glume surface structures, and second, how do the outer structures affect zoysiagrass seed germination and finally lead to variation in seed dormancy among strains. In this study ,we investigated zoysiagrass seed viability by a preliminary germination test, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, applying cut-seed treatments, measuring water uptake and studying the effect of light and temperature cycles on seeds from two domesticated strains (Z1 and Z2) and a wild form of zoysiagrass. Our results demonstrated that the strains with different seed dormancy levels had glumes with different surface features. Seed germination among strains was affected by: differences in water permeability, the interaction between alternating light and temperature, and the physical constraint to embryo growth. In addition, to the effects due to outer structures, physiological dormancy occurred in bare caryopses. As compared with physiological factors which control seed dormancy, the coat-imposed dormancy played a more important role in determining changes in seed germination among zoysiagrass strains." |
