Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted by Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey to "[demonstrate] different infield mixes." Details the methods and materials used in the study, stating that "we designed the Summer 2003 demonstration that included a total of five mixes; two falling within ASTM [American Society for Testing and Materials] standards, and three falling outside ASTM standards." Continues that "following installation, the infield mixes were left uncovered and therefore exposed to weather conditions ranging from heavy rainfall to prolonged dryness." Reports on the management requirements for each of the five mixtures, and explains that one-third of each plot was left uncovered for a period of two weeks. Notes that "the advantages of covering were evident...as the covered areas were game-ready whereas the uncovered sections were rock hard." Concludes that "sports field managers should consider their budgets, availability of labor, and typical environmental conditions (dry climate vs. moist climate) when choosing an infield mix."
