Abstract/Contents: | Presents a question and answer discussing the potential use of a material made from crushed rocks as the sand portion of a baseball diamond's infield mix. Emphasizes field design as the potentially "most critical factor related to skin surfaces for wet climates." Recommends that "field design must entail provisions for adequate surface drainage...[and that] no water should be directed onto the infield skin." Suggests "identifying a supplier with an infield mix in the range of 80 to 85% sand; remainder silt and clay." Notes that magnesium chloride is not viewed "as a substitute for the ability to supply water to the skin. Coarser, sandier mixes will tend to lose stability when dry; water is critical." |
