Abstract/Contents: | "Flurprimidol (Cutless) is labeled for application to mixed creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) and annual bluegrass (Poa annua) swards as a means of shifting the plant population to predominately creeping bentgrass. Some research has documented population changes in favor of creeping bentgrass, however, there are also reported inconsistencies. Research is needed to document the individual species responses to flurprimidol so that the population dynamics of treated mixed swards can be better understood. A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate flurprimidol for its affect on the stolon growth of bentgrass and the basal tillering rate annual bluegrass. Individual tillers of 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass and native annual bluegrass were established in a Hagerstown silt loam soil in a greenhouse from January 23 to February 1, 1992. On February 21, stolon internodal lengths on the bentgrass and basal tillers of the annual bluegrass were measured on those plants selected for treatment with flurprimidol. On March 29, flurprimidol was applied at 0.5, 0.6, and 1.0 lb product/A to one half of each flat. Plant measurements were made on both species for 88 days following treatment. Tiller counts of annual bluegrass treated with all flurprimidol rates were approximately the same as untreated plants for the first 51 days. Counts taken 88 DAT revealed that a trend had developed where by plants on the treated half of the 0.5 lb product/A flat had 2, the 0.6 lb product/A had 4, and the 1.0 lb product/A had 8 more tillers than plants on the untreated half of the flat. All flurprimidol rates caused a dwarfing response (caused by reduced leaf sheath growth). This response was still evident for the high rate after 88 days. Discoloration was also observed for all treatment rates; however, by 51 days there were no color differences between treated and untreated plants. The dwarfing/stunting response by the annual bluegrass, particularly at the high rate, restricted lateral spread even though treated plants produced more tillers than untreated plants (less space was used by more tillers). Creeping bentgrass plants had a slight and temporary discoloration at the high rate and had decreased vertical growth throughout the experiment. Internodal length measurements were variable and not consistent. It appears that any competitive advantage afforded creeping bentgrass in a mixed sward treated with flurprimidol is associated with its ability to produce normal stolon growth while annual bluegrass is less capable of occupying space even though the flurprimidol application has had a tendency to cause increased basal tillering." |
