Abstract/Contents: | Explains soil compaction and procedures which help alleviate it. Soil compaction is caused by excess foot or vehicular traffic. Soil compaction changes soil structure by: 1)increasing the bulk density, 2)increasing soil strength, 3)decreasing aeration, 4)increasing soil moisture, 5)decreasing infiltration and percolation, and 6)adversely effecting soil temperature. These conditions create stresses by restricting soil oxygen and water availability to the plant. The plant responds to the stress by: 1)decreasing root growth, 2)reducing plant growth, 3)increasing succulence, 4)decreasing carbohydrate reserves, 5)increasing disease susceptibility, 6)increasing weed infestation, and 7)reducing germination and slowing establishment. The correct response to soil compaction is to treat the cause, not adjust maintenance to the symptoms. Soil cultivation, a mechanical method for soil tillage, is the most effective method for relieving soil compaction. The sod cover must not be destroyed during the process. Soil cultivation methods include coring, grooving, slicing, and spiking. Each method is briefly described. Severely compacted soils may need modification and traffic restriction. |
