Abstract/Contents: | Data from long-term field experiments (0-15 years) were used to give a mathematical model of the accumulation of organic matter (OM) in the top soil layer of sports turf. The initially fast increase in OM content resulted in a relatively low humus content at equilibrium (7%) and a high rate of decomposition. Returning or removing clippings only slightly affected humus accumulation. Application of composted town refuse increased the OM content by 0.2%/year for every 25 m3 compost/ha given annually. Dressing with pure sand decreased the OM content by 0.2%/year for every 30 m3 sand/ha given annually. |
