Abstract/Contents: | Article discusses various overseeding techniques which the author has found either effective or ineffective in the New Hampshire area and the problems inherent to overseeding. The article recommends overseeding on August 15. Germination of Bent seed can occur in as little as three days. Soil temperatures are ideal. Morning dews are heavy. The sun is well past its solstice and even though it's August the sun is no stronger than it was in April. Bent seed is surprisingly hardy when planted at this time. Very little water is needed to insure establishment and the plants have sufficient time to mature and survive winter. The article describes the specific techniques used to overseed in this manner. Dormant seeding is also recommended because of its relative ease. In the spring the seed germinates when it is ready. Winter conditions ensure good seed/soil contact. There is no need for irrigation and no guess work regarding soil temperatures. There is also no struggling with wet uncooperative soils. Specific examples of dormant seeding are provided. |
