Abstract/Contents: | Notes are given on the morphology, life history, economic importance, detection and control of the chinch bug (Blissus sp.), which attacks some cereal crops and grasses and is a particular pest of lawns of Bermuda crabgrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum] in Bermuda. Nymphs and adults feed together in concentrated patches, preferring hot, dry, sunlit places and causing yellowing or browning of the grass in localised areas, and then migrate outwards. Infested lawns should be mown, watered thoroughly and allowed to dry before application of diazinon, chlorpyrifos, carbaryl or the special chinch bug killer Aspon [thiodiphosphoric acid ([(HO)2P(S)]2O) tetrapropyl ester] so as to wet the base of the leaves and runners; a second application of the first 3 compounds 7-10 days later is advisable, and a third may be required for severe infestations, since eggs are not killed by these insecticides. Aspon requires a follow-up application 8 weeks after the first. |
