Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst "to improve turfgrass cultivars with improved resistance to multiple diseases, "utilizing a molecular breeding program on creeping bentgrass and perennial ryegrass. Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that clones were developed in a greenhouse setting and "after the ryegrass stand was established, circles 0.45 m [meters] in diameter with spacing of 0.45 m from center to center were created by applying a solution of 4% [percent] Roundup (glyphosate) to the perennial ryegrass." Concludes that "the genetic study of these plants will expand our understanding of inheritance of disease resistance genes and open the possibility to improve important turfgrass species with resistance to multiple diseases."
