Abstract/Contents: | "Football has long been considered a high-risk sport because of the inherent physical nature of the game, especially when combined with the speed, strength and size of the player. Risk in this sport has been categorised as either intrinsic (person) or extrinsic (environment) related. To minimise the risk, as well as achieve a high standard of player safety, the quality of the playing surface needs to be judged on how well it plays as well as its overall physical appearance. The important playing quality characteristics are those that occur between the ball and the surface (ball-surface interaction) and between the ball and the player (ball-player interaction). These characteristics are measured in terms of ball bounce, ball roll, traction, surface hardness, and include both agronomic factors such as species composition and percent grass cover, as well as a number of soil physical properties. In 2002 a study was commenced, in association with Horticulture Australia Pty Ltd and the Australian Football League, to determine the important playing surface indicators that would reduce the risk of player injury. Some early data is given. Establishing a preferred and acceptable range of objectively measured performance indicators should contribute to higher standards of play, minimise the risk of player injury, and make for effective management decisions, without giving unrealistic expectations for the players and supporters of football." |
