Abstract/Contents: | The need to key out turfgrasses is essential because different grasses often bear the same common names and it removes any confusion that may exist with some species that aren't grasses. Since Latin is the universal language it is used for all scientific identification. The knowledge of the taxonomic characteristics and botanical terms is essential in using the key. Some plant parts that identify the grasses include: Leaf Blade, Sheath, Vernation, Ligule, Collar, Auricles, Leaf Shape and Surface Texture, Bunch Growth, Rhizomatous Growth, and Stoloniferous Growth.. Common Bermudagrass is best under extended periods of high temperature in Australia. It is widely used in golf tees and fairways. However, disadvantages exist; such as the production of flower heads under mown conditions. The breeding within Common couch and South African couch have resulted in improved varieties of hybrids. Four grasses have been developed in the US. They include Santa Ana, Tifway, Tifgreen, and Tifdwarf. These hybrids have advantages and disadvantages over the common type. |
