The study compared the effects of different topdressing application rates. In the fall 1989 cores were removed to evaluate layering sand and organic matter. Organic matter content of the "thatch-like" layer was also determined. As the interval between topdressing times increased, layering increased. Distant layers of sand and thatch were very evident since the thatch accumulated between topdressings. The interface of different texture materials can negatively affect water movement. There was no different texture materials can affect water movement. There was no difference in total organic matter (thatch) produced among the plots. Topdressing simply have diluted the thatch. So the light, frequent topdressing resulted in the most uniform growing medium. Most golf course superintendents have been using good quality sands or sand/peat mixes for topdressing, but fewer are using good quality for construction of new greens. Good quality sand should be in the coarse, medium and fine ranges (about .18 to .75 mm diameter sands). Of greater concern is the quality of peat and even mucks used in these mixes. Insist on good quality peat and sands when using these mixtures for topdressing and construction."
