Abstract/Contents: | Provides recommendations for enhancing spring greenup in Georgia turf such as centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass which may have had poor greenup in the spring of 1990 due to weather developments, improper fertilization or low mowing heights. General recommendations to enhance recovery if sufficient (50% or more) live plant material is present are: 1)irrigate lightly and frequently to maintain good surface soil moisture until normal growth occurs, then gradually return to normal practices, 2)after greenup, fertilize with a complete fertilizer at 1 lb. N per 1000 sq. ft. per month (do not exceed 2 lbs. per year on centipedegrass), 3)mow slightly higher than normal until growth improves, 4)lightly dethatch or lightly topdress if thatch or elevated stolons are a problem, 5)if diseases are thought to be a problem, correctly diagnose before treating, and 6)limit herbicide usage if possible. |
