Abstract/Contents: | Grass sports pitches receiving heavy wear in winter suffered more damage with sub-surface irrigation than with regulated overhead irrigation, pitches of fine to medium sand showing a greater degree of damage than those of medium to coarse sand or lava. More water was used for sub-surface irrigation than for overhead irrigation. On pitches with sub-surface irrigation sward damage was greater and recovery and growth slower on fine to medium sand than on coarser particles. Medium to coarse sands, however, are lower in shear strength and these problems are discussed in relation to the requirements of sports pitch turf. |
