Abstract/Contents: | Study to determine if spring seeding of Kentucky bluegrass sod can be improved through use of herbicides to eliminate competing broadleaf weeds and annual grasses. The study was conducted at a sod farm in Jessamine County, KY that was seeded in April 1989. Crabgrass, foxtail, plantain and other broadleaf weeds covered approximately 20% of the surface. Nine treatments were applied to three replcations of 6' x 20' plots on June 22, 1989. A repeat MSMA treatment was applied on June 30. Treatments were applied with a carbon dioxide sprayer at a 50 GPA spray rate. A table provides % control of broadleaf weeds and crabgrass and foxtail on 7/18/89 for 5 (Acclaim at 0.18 and 0.25, MSMA at 2.0 and 2.0 + 2.0, Buctril at 1.0 and 2.0, 2,4-D amine at 1.5, and 2,4-D amine + Banvel at 1.5 + 0.25 #ai/A, respectively) of the 9 treatments. For broadleaf weeds, best control was obtained with 2,4-D plus Banvel. Although Buctril is a much safer herbicide when spraying near other crops, it was ineffective at the more economical 1.0# ai/A rate. It should be noted that 67% broadleaf weed control was obtained with the repeat MSMA treatment whereas the percent broadleaf weeds actually increased in the plots sprayed with Acclaim. For annual grasses, one application of MSMA was ineffective and both application rates of Acclaim were only slightly effective. One hundred percent of the crabgrass and foxtail was controlled with the repeat MSMA treatment. The broadleaf weed chemicals appeared to actually increase the annual grass ground cover. By controlling broadleaf weeds the annual grasses actually became more aggressive. |
