Three types of analysis were performed: physical, chemical, and water. Mix #1, from a new green, consists of 80% sand and 20% rice hulls, while mix #2, from an existing green, consists of 70% sand, 10% soil, and 20% rice hulls. Both are used at the Pecan Grove Plantation Country Club in Richmond, TX. Both the club superintendent and architect attribute the success of these greens partially to the use of rice hulls. The most critical decision during golf course construction or renovation is how to build functional and affordable greens. Following USGA putting green specifications is recommended. Golf course construction and planning must be centered around the quality of the construction materials. Although greens occupy only two percent of the total golf course area, their construction is crucial to the success of the whole. The popularity of rice hulls in Texas was motivation for looking at these various mixes. Although a golf green consists of living soil, organisms, and plants, it is extremely artificial, even under the best design/construction criteria. Integrating a good quality organic material into the seedbed can be as important as selecting the proper sand and its proportions.
