Abstract/Contents: | 1986 studies to determine if mixing glyphosate with 2,4-D or dicamba reduces glyphosates eradication of broadleaf species in johnsongrass. A field trial, conducted near Richmond, Kentucky, in 1985 was repeated in 1986. Treatments consisted of glyphosate at 0.56, 1.1, and 1.7 kg/ha (1.1 kg/ha=1 lb/A) applied alone and in combination with the dimethylamine salts of 2,4-D or dicamba at 0.28, 0.56, 0.84 or 1.1 kg/ha. Treatments were applied when johnsongrass reached a height of 45 to 55 cm. Visual observations and biomass data were collected 4 weeks after treatment (WAT). Plots were then mowed and evaluated 8 WAT for regrowth. Results in 1986 indicated antagonism of johnsongrass control when glyphosate at 0.28 kg/ha was applied with 2,4-D or dicamba. The antagonism was not observed at the higher glyphosate rate. These results were similar to those obtained in 1985. Laboratory studies indicated that 2,4-D and dicamba reduce effectiveness of glyphosate by reducing its uptake and subsequent translocation. After verifying the results in greenhouse studies, a second greenhouse study was designed to determine the effect of 2,4-D or dicamba formulations on the observed antagonism. Treatments contained the following formulations: 2,4-D acid, 2,4-D butoxyethlester (Esteron 99), 2,4-D dimethylamine salt (DMA *4), 2,4-D isopropylamine salt, dicamba dimethylamine salt (Banvel), and dicamba sodium salt (Banvel II) at 0.28 and 0.49 kg/ha mixed with glyphosate at 0.28 kg/ha. Results indicated antagonism regardless of formulation. A treatment of Landmaster, (IPA), was also applied. Antagonism was not observed with the prepackaged mixture. Results show reduced glyphosate uptake is overcome in Landmaster formulation but not in the other mixtures. |
