Abstract/Contents: | 1983 update of 5 tests to evaluate tall fescue varieties under Kentucky climatic conditions. Established in 1976, test 1 includes 10 cultivars with 3 replications each maintained at a 2 inch height and without regular irrigation. Three pounds of Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft are applied annually during fall and early winter. A table provides 1977-83 annual and 7-year average visual quality ratings (1 to 9;9=best quality), density and percent tall fescue tillers in 12/83 and % brown patch on 7/15/83 with significant differences (SD) indicated. Brown patch was greatest in G1-323 (11.7%) and Rebel (13.3%) and least in KY 31 (0.3%). Momm Fa-8 has worst and Rebel best overall performance. Test 2, established 9/78, is a part of the Southern Regional Tall Fescue Test. Nineteen varieties were seeded in 3 replications. Maintenance and data collection were similar to that described for Test 1. A table provides 1979-83 annual and 5-year average visual quality ratings, % brown patch on 7/15/83, color ratings (1 to 9;9=greenest turf), and density and % tall fescue tillers in 12/83 with SD indicated. Goar had worst and Rebel had best overall performance. Brown patch was high in Calway(6.7%), Monaco and Fawn(10%) and Belt syn 16-1(16.7%). Test 3, established 9/79, consisted of 30 varieties including a group of experimentals from the breeding program of Dr. R. C. Buckner. Due to plot location, this test was destroyed in August 1983. Test 4, established 9/82, includes 46 named and experimental varieties. Three replications are maintained at a 1.5-inch height and three at a 3-inch height. Three pounds of nitrogen are applied annually during the fall and early winter. Botanical counts were taken only on the 1-inch height in 1983. A table provides 1983 April-November monthly and year average visual quality ratings, % brown patch on 7/15/83 and # tall fescue tillers/sq. in. (1.5" height only) with SD indicated. At 1.5", So Fm Blend had worst and olympic best overall performance. % brown patch ranged from 0(So Fm Blend) to 27.7(53-2). At 3.0", So Fm Blend had worst and 5M4-82 best overall performance. Test 5, established 9/26/83, is included in the National Tall Fescue Test. Fifty-four experimental and commercially available cultivars were seeded in three replications at the rate of 4.65 lb/1000 sq ft. Establishment was successful and data will be collected in 1984. |
