Abstract/Contents: | Polycross progenies (P.C.P.) of 7 tall fescue clones, selected from spaced plant nurseries for superior turf quality characteristics, and their syn. 2 strain, in addition to 32 other named varieties and experimental strains, were evaluated under turf management conditions during 1983. The test was broadcast seeded September 17, 1982, at ca. 2.7 kg per 90M2. The grass was mowed regularly once each week to a 3.75 cm cutting height during the 1983 growing season. During August, the synthetic and three of its consitituent P.C.P.'s had significantly greater turf quality (color, density, and resistance to weed encroachment) than 13 of the commercial varieties and experimental strains, but during November, the synthetic and P.C.P.'s were superior only to the Kentucky 31 variety. Kenhy and Johnstone varieties, developed for hay and pasture utilization, compared favorable and were not significantly different to the fine-leaf varieties presently being marketed for turf purposes. Very little entry X growing season interaction was observed, i.e., entries that performed well during August were judged as superior during November. |
