Abstract/Contents: | Suggests that Tasmanian grass grubs are similar to the Subterranean grass caterpillar, and should not be confused with the white grass-root eating grub, as "the latter feeds entirely upon the roots - the former confines its depredations to the foliage only." Describes the caterpillar as a dark green color with a small brown head "equipped with scissor-like feeders," which grows to about 1.75 inches and is the thickness of a wooden match. Notes that the caterpillar is active at night, coming to the surface to feed and closing the burrow when not feeding. Recommends mixing 1 pound of Paris green with 7 pounds of bran, damping the mixture and spreading it lightly over the green during late evening in order to control the insect. |
