Abstract/Contents:"Rossmoor is a planned adult community which occupies an elongated, bowl-shaped valley of about 1,800 acres. It is located within the city of Walnut Creek which is inland from the San Francisco Bay area." Rossmoor has a population of approximately 8,500 residents, whose average age is 75.5 years. About 1,000 of these residents play golf. " In addition to the golf course, the community has many advantages. Among them are a medical clinic, numerous service clubs, stables, a bus system and the Rossmoor security force. In 1964, when Rossmoor was first occupied, the original 18-hole course was dedicated for play. In 1975 nine new holes were added." The new nine blended into the back nine and now make up the South Course. The original front nine became the North Course. Rossmoor is a 27-hole, private course. A unique feature of the course is the absence of rough areas. The primary reason is to speed up and facilitate play because of the age of the golfers. Many projects for improving the course are either already completed or still underway. One was the rebuilding and renovation of number eight and number 11 greens on the South Course. This was accomplished with golf course personnel. Other greens are scheduled for the future. Four tees have been rebuilt and all the sand in the bunkers has been changed from Manteca Brown to Unimix bunker sand. The pH levels of the greens have also been raised from levels in the 4.0 range to levels averaging 5.5. A major project was the installation of a Rain Bird Maxi V computerized irrigation management system. The culmination of this project was a testimony of the ability of people to work together to achieve a goal. This project was a study in teamwork. Rossmoor is also home of one of the best lawn bowling facilities in the United States, with three full-size bowling greens of 14,000 square feet each.
