Abstract/Contents:After 50 years working at golf courses around the nation, Dan Gieseler views his Grounds Superintendent position at the Marriott's Desert Springs as a climax to a career. Dan started in 1941 as a caddy and golf course worker in Ohio. After serving in the Marines, he found a position as the assistant superintendent at the Mayfield Country Club in Cleveland, OH. In 1960, his thirty-one year stint as a golf course superintendent began at the Lake Forest Country Club in Ohio. In 1972, Gieseler moved to California, finding a position at Mission Viejo Country Club and the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, where he experienced five Los Angeles Opens. The chance came to build the Beaver Creek Golf Course in Vail, Colorado and Dan took the opportunity, which lasted four years. In 1984, Marriott's Desert Springs gave him an opportunity to do what he loves best-construct not one, but two courses. "Three years later, both the Palms and Valley courses at the hotel were in full swing. Both courses have common bermudagrass in the fairways, while the greens and tees are bermuda hybred 328." The Palms course has a Rain Bird Maxi Three irrigation system and the Valley course uses a Toro Network 8000. Trees on the course are fitted with a drip irrigation system in order to enable a customized irrigation schedule that will result in deep rooting. The Palms course has recently been fitted with variable speed drive pumps, which have resulted in a large cost savings in energy bills. "Gieseler plans to have the Valley course on the system within the next year. The Valley course has been irrigated with effluent water since last October, which has resulted in a few minor problems. The lakes on the course have been more prone to algae bloom, and there is often a noticeable chlorine odor. One of the goals that Gieseler has set for himself is to have all mowing completed by the first tee time at 7:00 a.m. In order to accomplish this, the crew is scheluled to start at 5:30. Greens are mowed daily while aprons and fairways are done three times a week. Since the sand leaches quickly, fertilization is done every six weeks with a granular fertilizer. Gieseler's responsibilities are not limited to the golf courses." The hotel's grounds and interior are extensively landscaped and under his responsibility. " Hotel guest can also enjoy two recently installed grass tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a bocci ball lawn." One of the most intriguing sights at the hotel is the 18-hole putting course.
