Abstract/Contents: | "The Native Turfgrass Development Group (NTDG) has announced they have reached an agreement with the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska, for the exclusive worldwide rights to propagate, name, and market selected seeded buffalograss cultivars. Buffalograss is a native, warm season species noted for its short slow, stonloniferous growth habit. The species can meet ecological demands for low maintenance turf that will have reduced requirements for mowing, water, fertilizer, and pesticides. The buffalograss research project at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is part of a long range effort of the United States Golf Association to develop turfgrasses which reduce water use and the need for other cultural inputs. Project leader, Dr. Terry Riordan said, "This project has allowed us to quickly develop new cultivars of this native species for use where water use is restrictd because of limited quantity. These grasses will also use less pesticides and probably reduce the amount of clippings going into landfills." NTDC marketing plans will include making the new cultivars available for sub-licensing to other producers and marketers of turf seed products." |
