Abstract/Contents:Describes why bentgrass leaves turn a purple or blue-gray color after the first frosty night in the fall. This reaction is caused by the cool-to-cold temperature change when sugars produced in plants on warm, sunny days are not completely moved out of the leaf and they accumulate. Also describes other sugars in plants and their effects. Mentions applications of various products that often cause a similar blackening or purpling effect that can happen at any time of the year.
