Abstract/Contents: | "Topdressing applications of a 3.5 yr-old sludge compost from Endicott, NY and a 1 yr-old brewery waste compost (AllGrow) from Baldwinsville, NY significantly reduced the incidence of gray snow mold on a creeping bentgrass/annual bluegrass putting green as compared with untreated plots. The level of control provided by these and all of the other composted materials were statistically as good as that provided by the fungicide Banner. The two Ringer products evaluated in this study (Compost Plus and Greens Restore) were ineffective in suppressing gray snow mold. Increasing the application rate of Sustane, BactoPlus, or AllGrow from 10% to 60% did not increase the level of disease suppression provided by these materials. All three composts were suppressive when as little as 10% (v:v) was mixed with sand and applied as a topdressing. Application frequency, however, dramatically affected the level of gray snow mold suppression. While biweekly and monthly applications were effective in suppressing gray snow mold, bimonthly applications were ineffective and disease serverity did not differ from that in untreated plots. |
