Abstract/Contents: | "Several new bentgrasses have become available in recent years, primarily for the golf course market. While genetic diversity is apparent in terms of quality, vigor, texture, and growth habit, little is known about differnces in disease susceptibility of the newer cultivars. The objective of this study, therefore, is to evaluate 15 creeping bentgrass cultivars, 3 colonial bentgrass cultivars, one dryland bentgrass cultivar, one browntop bentgrass, one perennial ryegrass, and four mixtures of bentgrass and chewings fescue for resistance to four diseases. The results for two rating dates can be found in Table 1. The results show that significant differences occurred for both rating dates. All *Star perennial ryegrass was most severely injured form Pythium root rot, with more than half the inoculated areas killed within three weeks. There was a great deal of variability within the test. As a result, there was no treatment separation among the bentgrasses. The (there) were, however, trends in cultivar resistance worth noting. Tracenta colonial bentgrass and National creeping bentgrass showed the greatest resistance to Pythium root rot in the first rating date. The damage on National, however, was more severe at the second rating date. Other bentgrasses that tended to exhibit some resistance in this initial screening included 88. CBL, Penncross, Cobra, and Egmont. This very preliminary data suggests that differences in Pythium root rot resistance among bentgrass cultivars may indeed exist. This information was published in the 1990 Biological and Cultural Control of Plant Dieseases." |
