Abstract/Contents:"The number of herbicides for use in turfgrasses is rapidly increasing. Oryzalin, benefin + oryzalin, benefin + trifluralin and pendimenthalin were labeled in 1986 for weed control in selected turfgrasses. Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) control has been shown to be equivalent; however, differences in goosegrass (Eleusine indica) control do exist among these herbicides. Sequential applications of oryzalin, but not pendimethalin, were required for acceptable levels of goosegrass control (8). A 0.5X rate application at 60 days following the initial X rate application increased crabgrass and goosegrass control over that of a single X rate application for benefin + oryzalin, oryzalin and pendimethalin (6). 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass mowed at 2.0 cm exhibited excellent tolerance to 1X and 3X rates of pendimethalin, oryzalin and oryzalin + benefin (8). At a mowing height of 0.6 cm, late February applications of benefin + oryzalin at 1.0 + 1.0 lbs. ai/acre delayed the greenup of 'Tif Dwarf' bermudagrass longer than applications of pendimethalin at 3.0 lbs. ai/acre and oryzalin at 2.0 lbs. ai/acre. Murphy (12) reported that at labeled rates, March applications of oryzalin severely decreased (88%) and pendimethalin moderately decreased (36%) the stand of annual ryegrass that was seeded in November of the previous year. The potential of the dinitroanilines as a transition aid needs to be investigated. Sethoxydim received a label in 1987 for weedy grass control in centipedegrass. Lewis and DiPaola (10) and Evans (5) showed that centipedegrass was tolerant to single and multiple applications of sethoxydim. Seedling centipedegrass has been reported to be tolerant to sethoxydim (5); however, additional research is needed. Imazaquin was labeled in 1987 for applications to bermudagrass, centipedegrass, zoysiagrass and St. Augustinegrass. Riley et al. (13) and Coats et al. (3) reported good to excellent control of wild garlic (Allium vineale) and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), respectively. Bermudagrass was slightly injured by imazaquin, but no injury occurred on the other labeled warm-season grasses. Fenoxaprop was labeled in 1987 for applications to cool-season turfgrasses (except annual ryegrass and bentgrass). Lewis (9) and Bhowmik (2) reported effective smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum) control with fenoxaprop in tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, respectively. 'Penncross' bentgrass and 'Tifgreen II' bermudagrass maintained at putting green heights exhibited better tolerance to low rates of fenoxaprop than to low rates of sethoxydim, xylafor, poppenante, haloxyfop and fluazifop (7). However, injury and density reductions were too severe for fenoxaprop use on putting greens. Diclofop at 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 lbs. ai/acre provided good control of goosegrass with little or no injury to a 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass green (11). Tall fescue control in established Kentucky bluegrass has been demonstrated with diclofop (4). Members of the sulfonylurea herbicide family (sulfometuron, chlorsulfouron, metsulfuron and DPX-M6316) show potential for weed control in established warm-season turf. Mature centipedegrass was tolerant to sulfometuron; however, excessive injury occurred on seedling centipedegrass at various stages of development (1). Sulfometuron provided good control of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) in centipedegrass (1,10)."
