Abstract/Contents: | Nitrogen appears to be the biggest factor affecting the quality and speed of a putting green. High rates of nitrogen are not recommended during the growing season. Evidence shows that 1/2 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per growing month may be the best. High rates of nitrogen applied during the growing months tend to sacrifice root growth for top growth. This results in lush growth and quick healing but the turf is easily damaged by traffic and disease. Grass is toughest when only very small amounts of nitrogen are available. Potassium is another big factor that contributes to the quality of a putting green. Applying equal or higher amounts of potassium than nitrogen results in a less need for syringing and the greens stand up better to traffic. At high potassium levels the grass is less likely to wilt, is more disease resistant, has a better root system, is more traffic tolerant, and has stiffer blades. Maintenance also plays a big role in having championship greens. Daily mowing at 3/16 inch or less, brushing or verticutting at least once a week, and lightly topdressing monthly are important factors. |
