Abstract/Contents: | "Sclerotinia homoeocarpa F.T. Bennett, the causal agent of dollar spot, is the most destructive pathogen in turfgrass. Dollar spot affects both cool- and warm-season grasses, during a wide range of growing conditions. Increased pressure to manage turfgrass in an ecologically friendly manner has reinvigorated the search for alternatives to synthetic fungicides. Synthetic and biological fungicides, including bacterial and fungal species, are being evaluated for their ability to suppress dollar spot on L-93 creeping bentgrass in Clemson, South Carolina (USA). Preventive study results indicated a monthly application of Daconil Ultrex (chlorothalonil) followed by EcoGuard (Bacillus licheniformis), Paradigm (clove oil) or Plant Shield (Trichoderma harzianum), all biological products, applied 14 days after Daconil Ultrex showed statistically similar control as synthetic fungicide treatments applied every other week spring through fall. Curative studies showed by August 2009, Headway (azoxystrobin + propiconazole) rate + EcoGuard, Headway and Daconil reduced dollar spot occurrence to less than 10%. Headway rate + Paradigm, and Headway rate + Rhapsody (Bacillus subtilis) decreased dollar spot occurrence below 20% compared to 100% disease occurrence at the start of the study 5 weeks earlier. Additional studies are ongoing evaluating product timings, rates, and combinations, along with fertility interactions." |
