Abstract/Contents: | "Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum cereale Manns, can be a devastating disease of annual bluegrass [Poa annua L. f. reptans (Hausskn) T. Koyama] turf. Increased N fertility has been reported to reduce anthracnose severity on P. annua; however, the impact of nitrogen form on this disease is not known. In 2010, a field study was initiated in North Brunswick, NJ to determine the effect of soluble-N forms on anthracnose severity of P. annua mowed at 3.2 mm. Nitrogen was applied at 4.9 kg N ha-1 every 1 or 2 weeks as solutions of ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, urea, calcium nitrate or potassium nitrate from 4 June to 20 Aug. 2010 and 12 May to 26 Aug. 2011. All N forms applied weekly, except ammonium sulfate on 3 of 5 observation dates in 2011, had significantly lower disease severity than N sources applied every 2 weeks. There were few difference among N forms when applied every 2 weeks; whereas, N form had more impact on disease severity at a weekly application interval. Potassium nitrate applied weekly had significantly less disease than all other weekly treatments; whereas weekly applications of ammonium sulfate resulted in the greatest disease severity." |
