Abstract/Contents: | "Traditionally in many Mediterranean countries, including Italy, amenity turfs are established by using cool-season grasses even though warm-season species would be more suitable to Mediterranean environments because of their high drought tolerance. Being Italy a transition climate region, there is the need to acquire more information about the potential use of warm-season grass species, such as Cynodon spp., Paspalum spp. and Zoysia spp.. To collect useful data on different warm season species and varieties, an experimental trial was carried out in an internal area of central Italy. Seven cultivars of warm-season grasses and one cool season species (Lolium perenne) as control were studied. Plots were established on June 2011 in a randomized block design and data collection included ground cover and presence of weeds, color, aesthetic global quality and leaf blade width. Results reported for Cynodon dactlylon Black Jack show fast ground cover capacity during establishment (the fastest after Lolium perenne Kokomo), good color and global quality. Cynodon dactlylon Casino Royale and La Paloma score well for color and ground coverage, and score poorly for leaf blade width. Paspalum vaginatum Sea Spray and P. vaginatum Marina show the best value for leaf blade width, while the two cultivars of Zoysia japonica (Compadre and Zenith) showed the slowest establishment capacity but a good turf quality. The results obtained allow for a proper evaluation of these turfgrasses for turfs in the mentioned area." |
