Abstract/Contents: | "Lolium perenne L. and Agrostis stolonifera L. are 2 of the most used C3 turfgrass species in Spain. L. perenne is mainly used for football pitches, golf course fairways of Spanish cool climates and for overseeding on bermudagrass fairways whilst A. stolonifera is used for greens in golf courses. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in Valencia (Spain) from September 2009 to June 2010 in order to determine the behavior of 2 promising new varieties of the mentioned grasses when being irrigated with different levels of salinity water (1, 3, 5, 7 and 15 dS.m-1). Both varieties ('Paragon GLR' for L. perenne and 'Tyee' for A. stolonifera) were sown in 5 x 8 plug trays, with 3 replicate trays per salinity level. All trays were irrigated by immersion during 1 minute every week and the following records were taken: grass height and visual general aspect every week, fresh weight of 3 plugs per tray every 5 weeks, regrowth height after plug sampling and substrate salinity of the sampled plugs. Results indicate that both varieties are in terms of general aspect and fresh weight at least short term (4 to 6 months) resistant till 7 dS.m-1 salinity level, but they are sensible to 15 dS.m-1 almost since the first month. Turf height was lower with the 7 and 15 dS.m-1 than with the other 3 salinity levels and regrowth after fresh weight indicate that the 5 dS.m-1 salinity level is affecting the plant. After 24 irrigations with water at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 15 dS.m-1, the substrate salinity was 0.6, 0.9, 1.4, 2.4 and 3.5 dS.m-1 respectively." |
