As consequence cities face various problems as overheating, poor comfort of home, lack of natural habitats and green recreation areas. Following the prognoses of meteorologists the climate change phenomenon will even foster the named deficits of the actual urban fabrique. Since the creation of new parks in dense city districts is impossible, a solution to integrate green in the existing cities are facade bound greening systems. In contrast to traditional facade greenings using climbing plants, facade bound systems allow the application of grasses and herbs. The systems are mounted directly on the buildings facade and provide planar root zones for plants. The Institute of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape Construction (IBLB) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna investigated the suitability of different grass species (Festuca rubra ssp., Festuca ovina, Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, Carex morowii, Sesleria albicans, Sesleria caerulea). The development of the individual degree of coverage, growth height and vitality have been investigated. The results showed that the suitability of the respective grass species is predominantly influenced by the greening system properties e.g. Sesleria sp. is suitable for the tested system (Grünwand) while Festuca rubra ssp. cannot be recommended. Facade bound greening systems have high potential to bring grasses downtown. Besides improving quality of life and comfort of home they have positive effects on the urban microclimate and thermal insulation of buildings."
