Abstract/Contents: | "Annual meadowgrass (Poa annua L.; AMG) is widely adapted to most growing environments and is generally considered a weed on golf course putting greens. Although numerous sustainable and low input management practices have been gaining popularity in the United States and around the globe, limited to no research-based information is available on the success of these programs to reduce AMG while promoting more desirable species such as creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.; CBG). The objective of this two-year field study was to identify the influence of low and high-input management strategies on AMG populations. The primary cultural and chemical management inputs included various rates of nitrogen, ferrous sulfate and plant growth regulators (PGRs). A two-year field study was initiated in 2010 on a research putting green with a mixed stand of 'L-93' CBG (~75%) and AMG (~25%). All trials were conducted at the Joseph Valentine Turfgrass Research Center located in University Park, PA. Plots measured 0.9 x 1.8 m and were arranged as a 2 x 3 x 3 factorial in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Main factors included nitrogen (N) (0, 25, or 107 to 146 kg N/ha/year), PGRs (none, trinexapac-ethyl [0.043 kg ai/ha/application], or flurprimidol [12 kg ai/ha/application]), and ferrous sulfate (Fe) (0, 12, or 49 kg Fe/ha/application). Treatments were initiated on 26 May 2010 and applied approximately every 3 weeks throughout the 2010 and 2011 growing season. All treatments were applied in 4073 L H2O/ha using a CO2 backpack sprayer (345 kPa). Annual meadowgrass populations fluctuated throughout the season regardless of treatment. At the end of 2010, only plots treated with flurprimidol (regardless of N or Fe) had the lowest percent AMG. By September 2011, plots treated with flurprimidol had an average of 8 and 21% AMG at the low and high seasonal N rates, respectively. All other treatment combinations had an average of 44% AMG per plot with a range of 37 to 49%. Overall, only flurprimidol-treated plots resulted in a reduction of AMG relative to the initial populations. Plots receiving low seasonal N applications (25 kg N/ha/year) generally had lower ABG populations when compared to those receiving 107 to 146 kg N/ha/year. Ferrous sulfate (all rates and combinations) had little impact on AMG populations, but was effective at improving turf color in plots receiving low N." |
