Abstract/Contents: | "As the rapid urbanization and density of residents in urban areas increases, untreated domestic wastewater is becoming one of the main sources of contamination for river systems in China. The major pollutants in domestic wastewater are organic wastes and minerals, both of which can be utilized by plants. The expansion of urban turfgrass areas, make it possible for in situ treatment of wastewater within urban ecosystems. In this paper, we report the primary results of pollutant removal in wastewater using the Agrostis stolonifera root system. The results showed that the shoot growth of the turfgrass was stimulated by wastewater irrigation. Furthermore, leaf growth rate increased under the wastewater irrigation treatment and shoot fresh weight increased by 75.6% after 6 weeks of treatment compared with that shown for the pure water control treatment. However, the wastewater treatment did not show any significant effects on root growth. The removal rates of TN, TP, and CODCr in the turfgrass root system reached as high as 71.0%, 53.1%, and 82.8%, respectively, whilst that in the non-turfgrass soil system were only 24.6%, 13.0%, and 44.2% respectively. The results indicated that creeping bentgrass root systems had good decontaminating effects on domestic wastewater and therefore may be suitable to be used in urban household wastewater treatment." |
