Abstract/Contents: | "When characterizing the degree of compation of soils the bulk density is often used. This is without any problems when comparing bulk densities of the same soil or of soils with an equal organic matter content. As soon as soils with different organic matter contents are considered, however, the same bulk density can indicate a loose state for the one and a dense state for the other soil material. This paper describes the reason for this phenomenon and proposes the use of the relative densiy for characterization of the degree of compaction of soils with different organic matter contents. Moreover, it is indicated how to determine the relative density and apply it to compare the compaction degree of sandy top layer materials occurring on a number of regularly used soccer pitches in the Netherlands." |
