Abstract/Contents: | "Task Force II is a partnership of 5 ag chemical companies formed to respond to the 1988 EPA data call-in (DCI) on 2,4-D. The cost of meeting the DCI is expected to exceed $10,000,000. Task Force One, formed to respond to the 1981 DCI, spent $4,000,000 meeting toxicological requirements. All studies are progressing well. Results of completed studies thus far have been consistent with prior studies, something expected when dealing with so thoroughly a researched herbicide. The time for reregistration is to complete and submit all studies by the end of 1994, with reregistration expected by 1998. New dog, rat and mouse chronic studies will take the longest to complete. Since 2,4-D is currently registered on many crops, priority of residue studies is necessary (no previous studies are acceptable). The current plan is to initiate residue studies on wheat and small grains, corn, sorghum, rice, sugarcane and rangeland/pasture. Non-crop reregistration will include industrial vegetation, lawn and turf, forestry and aquatics. Although there is nothing in the existing toxicology package to raise safety concerns about 2,4-D, several epidemiological studies (the NCI Kansas and Nebraska farmworker studies) have suggested a link between herbicides including 2,4-D and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. A more recent NCI study suggested a link between canine lymphoma and dogs exposed to lawns treated with 2,4-D. In these studies, excessive exposure was required to achieve their conclusions, conclusions which were not statistically significant or only marginally so. At least 7 other epidemiological studies have shown no link between 2,4-D and non-Hodgkins lymphoma or any other cancer. Researchers have expressed concern about some of the methodology used in the NCI studies, particularly the use of proxy or next-of-kin respondents to determine potential herbicide exposure of a deceased cancer victim population. The Center for Disease Control recently completed a study to determine the validity of such data, and the Task Force earlier had agreed to fund 2 extensive data validity studies proposed by the Canadian Centre for Toxicology and the Univ. of Minnesota School of Public Health. The results of these studies will be published in the near future." |
